The Music of Charlie Brown: A Tribute to Vince Guaraldi

When pianist Vince Guaraldi took the job composing the music for the Peanuts Christmas special that first aired in 1965, he accomplished two remarkable feats. One, he gave the TV special a unique soundtrack of Latin-flavored jazz that perfectly complemented Charlie Brown and the Peanuts characters. And two, Guaraldi ultimately made jazz tunes accessible, to be remembered by millions of TV viewers across generations of fans of the show.

Her disposition aligns more closely with that of, say, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, or her fellow Kentuckian Tom T. Hall, who once explained—simply, succinctly, in a song—“I Witness Life.”

Susan Alcorn

Bop Shop Records is pleased to present: SUSAN ALCORN
Sunday, September 15, 8 pm
Bop Shop Records 1460 Monroe Ave. Rochester NY
$20 at the door / $15 students

One of the world’s premiere musical innovators on her instrument, Baltimore-based Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country and western swing music. Known among steel guitarists for her virtuosity and authenticity in a traditional context, Alcorn first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands. Soon she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of modern classical music (Messiaen, Varèse, Penderecki), the deep listening of Pauline Oliveros, Astor Piazzolla’s nuevo tango, free jazz, and world musics (Indian rags, South American songs, and gamelan orchestra). Her pieces reveal the complexity of her instrument and her musical experience while never straying from a very direct, intense, and personal musical expression. The UK Guardian describes her music as "beautiful, glassy and liquid, however far she strays from pulse and conventional harmony." Her latest release Soledad is available from Rellative Pitch Records

Steve Katz

Bop Shop Records is thrilled to present STEVE KATZ
Wednesday, August 21 8pm
Bop Shop Records 1460 Monroe Ave.
Rochester NY 14618
$18 advance, $20 day of show.

Legendary guitarist Steve Katz is or at least was definitely a rock star: a pioneer of the blues-rock genre with his early 1960s band, the Blues Project; a founder in the late 1960s of the groundbreaking and hugely popular jazz-rock big band Blood, Sweat & Tears; and the producer of Lou Reed’s best-selling and still-influential live LP Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal (as well as its follow-up Sally Can’t Dance, Reed’s only top-10 album). Katz engagingly recounts fascinating stories in an insightful, intelligent, sometimes wistful and sometimes funny style that makes this one of the few rock memoirs worth reading from beginning to end. Highlights include his early days getting lessons from blues guitar genius Rev. Gary Davis in a “little clapboard shanty” in the South Bronx; the birth of Blood, Sweat & Tears despite Katz’s contentious relationship with co-founder and Dylan collaborator Al Kooper (“Al never liked my guitar playing and I never liked his voice”); the phenomenal success—with Kooper’s replacement singer, David Clayton-Thomas of BS&T’s second self-titled LP with hits such as “Spinning Wheel”; and later, “David’s transformation from soul singer to slinger of schmaltz.” Katz also reveals that the audience sound on Reed’s live LP was lost and then replaced by the audience track from a John Denver live LP, a priceless story for all Reed fans or detractors. – PUBLISHER’S WEEKLY, MAY, 2015

BOP SHOP RECORDS & LOVIN' CUP present: STICK MEN
TUESDAY, AUGUST 6TH, 8PM
Lovin' Cup Bistro & Brews 300 Park Point Drive, Rochester, NY
$25 ADVANCE/$30 DAY OF SHOW

Tickets on sale at Lovin' Cup and online.

Stick Men is a progressive rock band created from musicians with extensive experience playing together. Pat Mastelotto and Tony Levin are the rhythm section of the legendary band King Crimson. Mastelotto is in demand all over the world as the premier drummer for progressive rock. Levin plays the unusual instrument, the 12 string Chapman Stick, in Crimson, and with Peter Gabriel and others. Markus Reuter is a composer/guitarist who designed and plays his own unique touch style guitar.

Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto, the powerhouse bass and drums of the group King Crimson for some years, bring that tradition to all their playing. Levin plays the Chapman Stick, from which the band takes it’s name. Having bass and guitar strings, the Chapman Stick functions at times like two instruments. Markus Reuter plays his self-designed touch style guitar – again covering much more ground than a guitar or a bass. And Mastelotto’s drumming encompasses not just the acoustic kit, but a unique electronic setup too, allowing him to add loops, samples, percussion, and more.
The result; audiences are fascinated by watching just three musicians onstage perform pieces like Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, King Crimson’s Red and Lark’s Tongues, as well as wild improvs and their own catalog of unique music.

The group formed in 2008, originally with two Chapman Stick players – but when stickist Micheal Bernier had to leave for personal reasons, Markus, already in a duo group with Pat, was brought in, utilizing his familiarity with King Crimson music (he studied with Robert Fripp, that group’s founder) and his unique instrument and sense of composition, to become an invaluable third member of the group.

Tony Levin
Born in Boston, Tony Levin started out in classical music, playing bass in the Rochester Philharmonic. Then moving into jazz and rock, he has had a notable career, recording with John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Yes, Alice Cooper, and many more. He has also released 5 solo CDs and three books. In addition to touring with Stick Men, he is currently a member of King Crimson, of the Peter Gabriel Band, and of the jazz band L’Image. His popular website, tonylevin.com, featured one of the web’s first blogs, and has over 4 million visits.

Pat Mastelotto
Very rarely does a drummer go on to forge the most successful career on the demise of their former hit band. Phil Collins and Dave Grohl have managed it, so too has Pat Mastelotto, a self taught drummer from Northern California, who has also been involved with pushing the envelope of electronic drumming. Pat has spent a lifetime jumping genres from pop, to prog, to electronica to world music with – among others – Mr. Mister, XTC, David Sylvian, The Rembrandts, Kimmo Pohjonen, and for the last 20 years with King Crimson.

Markus Reuter
Markus is a composer, guitarist, and producer. Initially trained as a pianist, he subsequently studied Robert Fripp’s Guitar Craft and learned to play the Chapman Stick, later moving onto the U8 Touch Guitar. Reuter has released several solo recordings and worked extensively with other musicians. He is one of the core members of the experimental band Centrozoon, is half of the duo Tuner (with Pat Mastelotto) and was also a member of Europa String Choir. Reuter has collaborated with Ian Boddy, Robert Rich, No-Man singer Tim Bowness, and many others.

Sunday, August 4, 8pm

Don Menza is a powerful tenor saxophonist, with an dynamic and distinctive sound and soloing style. Born in Buffalo, New York in 1936, Menza started playing tenor saxophone when he was 13. After getting out of the Army, he was with Maynard Ferguson’s Orchestra (1960-1962) as both a soloist and an arranger.

A short tenure with Stan Kenton and a year leading a quintet in Buffalo preceded a period living in Germany (1964-1968). After returning to the U.S., he joined Buddy Rich’s 1968 big band in the “jazz tenor” chair, recording the famous solo cadenza on “Channel 1 Suite” (Recorded “live” at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas) that utilized circular breathing and has become known as a classic among music educators and musicians alike.

He settled in California and has worked with Elvin Jones (1969), Louie Bellson, as an educator, and in the studios. Don Menza, who has made far too few records, recorded as a leader for Saba (1965) in Germany, Discwasher (1979), Realtime, and Palo Alto (the latter two in 1981). Don was a long time member of The Tonight Show Band, with Johnny Carson.

His compositions, such as “Groovin’ Hard” and “Time Check” (both favorites of Doc Severinsen’s NBC Orchestra and Buddy Rich’s Big Band) have become standard repertoire in jazz studies programs at colleges and universities worldwide.

LaMay & Reese

LaMay & Reese

Former Rochestarians, folk musicians, Joe LaMay & Sherri Reese, are keeping alive a tradition of music passed down through the generations.

Joe LaMay likes to say that he learned to play guitar in high school because he was “too short to play basketball.” The truth is, as a young man he was bitten by the music bug through the songs of the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

It was through his interest in their music that he studied their roots and influences and began his retro journey into the world of American folk music. Within this music he discovered the magical songs of the rivers, mountains, towns, people, and the vast plain of our rich and colorful musical heritage.

Sherri Reese comes from a musical family. Her father played bluegrass and traditional country music all his life. She grew up hearing the melodies and songs of the Carter Family, Doc Watson, Reno & Smiley, The Stanley Brothers, and other mountain music.

She began playing guitar in her teens, and was drawn to the songs of Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Tom Paxton, Emmylou Harris and other folk music performers. When she began hearing the influence of roots music in their songs, she knew she had come full circle.

LaMay & Reese met at a Golden Link singaround in 1998. They were drawn to each other’s music and soon began performing together. It wasn’t long before they gained a reputation for their original songs and old-style harmony, as well as their stage presentation of their favorite traditional and contemporary songs.

It has been said that Joe & Sherri “know a good song and write a good song.” As songwriters, they have had several of their original songs recorded and performed by other folk musicians and bluegrass bands.

LaMay & Reese’s performances are warm, entertaining and enjoyable. With Joe on his guitar and Sherri on her banjo, they present an eclectic collection of traditional and original songs that are sure to inspire the novice and please the traditionalist.

Since 2004, LaMay & Reese have been contributing monthly music segments to Bill Knowlton’s Bluegrass Ramble Radio Show. Their twenty-minute segments feature songs and musicians recorded “live” in KY and on the road. They have featured dozens of musicians, and hundreds of songs. The Bluegrass Ramble is aired on NPR throughout the northeast and on the worldwide web.

In support of their local music community, in Somerset, KY, Joe & Sherri are music directors of the Carnegie Community Arts Center, host the monthly 3rd Friday Folk Coffeehouse, the weekly Lake Cumberland Jammers, and the Somerset Songwriters group.

In recognition of artistic excellence, Joe LaMay and Sherri Reese have been selected to participate in the Performing Arts Directory, a program of the Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, which is supported by state tax dollars and federal funding from the Endowment for the Arts.

Birth

From 1998 – 2004 the Cleveland-based trio Birth seemed to be playing regularly in Rochester. They were at the Bug Jar, Milestones, Java’s and, of course, the Bop Shop back in the Atrium days. We presented Birth twice in what were probably among their more unique concerts. The first time we presented them, they were given two sets. The first was a typical rousing freewheeling set of the trio doing what they did best. The second set was unique. At the time, in Village Gate there was an instrument store. The second set presented the band “unplugged” at the instrument store, playing unique percussion instruments, flutes and other sundry items for an unusual set even by Birth standards. But it was a wonderful night of music. Birth played a second time at the store in one of the most memorable Bop Shop concerts of that era. They brought along microtonal saxophone master Joe Maneri. It was a memorable night of free improvisation with music of subtlety and power. But the most surprising moment was when Maneri said, “Let’s play a tune” and they wound up playing a wonderful, other-worldly version of “Body And Soul”.
Their music evolved from youthful, unrestrained, often “sensationalized” (inthe words of Joe Maneri) displays of prodigious outbursts on theirinstruments, to later, a hybrid of powerful, yet highly sensitiveimprovisation and composition that garnered attention and praise fromsome of the leading voices of the avant-garde jazz and creative music world.
A favorite of Cleveland jazz writer and folk icon Harvey Pekar, their musiclead Harvey to proclaim that birth was “So good that it’s scary.” “Awesome and magnificent” lauded The Wire. John Zorn wrote “The music is strong, as is the group.” They were voted best Cleveland band of all time by the outgoing editors from the Cleveland Free Times in its final edition.
Birth released four records during their tenure to critical acclaim, includingtwo studio records, as well as collections of live recordings. The trio toured in the US and Europe, constantly evolving their music and sound. They regularly performed at NYC’s Knitting Factory as well as other hubs of creative jazz including Tonic, and Chicago’s Empty Bottle. They presented countless concerts in Cleveland, bringing to town cohorts who were some of the finest in improvised and creative music, and inspired a younger generation of musicians who have gone on to establish themselves in the creative music world.
After a performance at the High Mayhem Festival in Santa Fe New Mexicoin 2004, the group went on an indefinite hiatus as its members disbursedto various corners of the country. Saxophonist Joshua Smith relocated toSan Francisco, California where he had performed with various groupsunder his own direction and as a sideman, Jeremy Bleich relocated to theSouthwest, and has lived and performed music for the past eight years in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Joe Tomino anchored in New York City andpursued studio and touring projects that have brought him into a variety ofnotable realms.
We’re glad they’re back and we’re pleased to present them once again. You won’t want to miss this one. They’ve always seemed like a band who were up for anything so we know this will be an entertaining night of exciting and powerful music.

Celebrate with us the glory of the record album and the music it serves!

When you walk into a record store its an escape for some of us. It seems like whatever situation you’re going thru in your life there is a song or artist that can describe it perfectly, whether its a happy feeling, or something bad, there’s an artist and song that can describe it perfectly. If I’m struggling with something in my life, then the right song will help me thru it. The record store is like a giant medicine cabinet. Its an environment of people of all walks of life that are professionals in what they do. The opinion of those people working at record stores are so important to me as a customer. They’ll tell me what’s good and let me know the truth on what’s only hype. They’ll tell me “when you buy this listen to track #6″ and might even say, “there’s only 2 really good songs on there, the rest is just B.S.” They know the history about the artists and music. When I buy music I want quality music. At the record store they can let me know what’s good, not just what the top seller is.”
