Charlie Ballantine Trio

From Front Row at Bop Shop Records: Livestream Concert Series: All "Front Row at Bop Shop Records" live streams are captured using MDG's and What's Real Unlimited's binaural head, Sade.

Charlie Ballantine swings by the store with his bassist, Quinn Sternberg, and drummer Chris Parker for an intimate show.

An arc of mystery and music stretches across America like a vein of gold, an eternal blue highway that grows mired in fable as time both adds to and erases it. What Greil Marcus called “the old, weird America” can be heard in the music of Robert Johnson and Santo and Johnny and Tammy Wynette and Duane Allman, from the dark underbelly birthed in New Orleans that extends across the plains from Bakersfield, California, to Macon, Georgia; from Roscoe Holcomb’s “high lonesome sound” to Bob Dylan’s “wild mercury sound.” And it can most definitely be heard in the reflective, lightning-flash-of-brilliance that is the music of 29-year-old Charlie Ballantine.

Bill Dobbins is revered internationally for his piano playing, but particularly for his compositions and arrangements. Dobbins has been teaching at Eastman since 1937 - with a stop overseas with the WDR Big Band - and his CDs and teaching materials have captivated listeners for decades.

Ellen Christi Quartet: From the Archives, 1998

This amazing archived concert features the Ellen Christi Quartet (and a much younger Tom Kohn!) performing at Bop Shop Records’ atrium. The audio was digitally recorded on May 22nd, 1998 using Matthew D. Guarnere's binaural head in tandem with other multitrack sources onto ADAT tape.

The video — a basic VHS reference tape — was only recently discovered. In June of 2020, Guarnere remixed the soundtrack in hopes that it would synchronize with the video. Incredibly, it did so frame by frame! So please enjoy this rare, long-awaited concert from 22 years ago which has now been optimized for your eyes as well as your ears!
