Marilyn Lerner, Ken Filiano and Lou Grassi

Marilyn Lerner (piano)
Ken Filiano (contrabass)
Lou Grassi (drums)

"Canadian pianist Marilyn Lerner has garnered a name for herself as one of the most diverse and exciting pianists to emerge in the last ten years. Best known among her releases is a series of albums with the co-op Queen Mab Trio, with violist Ig Henneman and clarinetist Lori Friedman. But also included in her discography are several albums based around Jewish music, a duo set with guitarist Sonny Greenwich and a number of piano trio releases, all drawing on both improvisation and composition. Arms Spread Wide may be the first time Lerner
has recorded with bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Lou Grassi, but they sound like a seasoned trio. Compositional credits going to all three players suggests that the music is pure improvisation. The musicians seem to know each other well, can suss out each others' intentions, and take the music in different directions, comfortable that the others will respond.

Lerner has found a pair of enormously simpatico players in Filiano and Grassi. They cover a wide terrain and are not boxed in by the limiting specificities of labels like 'free jazz' and 'piano trio' With Arms Spread Wide one of Lerner's strongest releases, and one of the best piano
trio discs released in some time, hopefully this group stays together and continues making music this vital." — Robert Iannapollo, AllAboutJazz

No Fast Food feat. Dave Liebman

NO FAST FOOD...is a trio of equals. 'Settings For Three' is the third release by the band, following the superb two-disc set 'In Concert.' This studio date finds the trio diving into eight Haynes compositions. Liebman rides above the formidable rhythm team of bassist Drew Gress and Haynes. They’ve been playing together for over 30 years but the music is anything but predictable...an excellent demonstration of improvisational elasticity.

Joe Policastro Trio

The Chicago-based trio returns to Bop Shop Records presenting a concert of original music from their upcoming fourth release, Nothing Here Belongs, alongside choice selections from their diverse catalogue.

http://bopshop.com/event/joe-policastro-trio/
http://www.thejptrio.com

The JOE POLICASTRO TRIO is an alternative jazz trio led by bassist Joe Policastro featuring guitarist Dave Miller and drummer Mikel Avery. While firmly rooted in jazz, the band’s open-minded, inclusive nature also brings rock, pop, old-school funk, soul, Brazilian, and free improvisation to the surface while still keeping the aesthetic of an acoustic trio intact.

Known for its eclectic taste and approach, the Joe Policastro Trio “makes the case that such musical hybridity is worth celebrating.” “Policastro…is a melody-minded bassist who prioritizes group cohesion over individual displays of virtuosity.” (Brian Zimmerman, Downbeat)

The Joe Policastro Trio is a band that can turn “pop tart into Jazz art” (Travis Rogers, Jazz Owl) and one that “should have wide appeal among both jazz fans and listeners of other genres.” (Hrayr Attarian, Chicago Jazz Magazine)

The trio has released three albums to date. Their most recent album, Screen Sounds, is an assemblage of movie/TV music re-imagined by the trio. Other releases by the band include 2013's West Side Story Suite For Jazz Trio, and 2016's POPS!, a collection of jazz interpretations of “pop” tunes from the 60s-90s and a nod to Chicago’s Pops For Champagne where the band continues its long-running, three-nights-a-week residency. They will soon be releasing their fourth album focusing on their original music entitled Nothing Here Belongs.

“The trio have refined their layered blend of the familiar and faintly far out, playing three nights a week at Chicago’s Pops For Champagne and through extensive roadwork. Their deep understanding of each other and deft analysis of choice repertoire repays repeat and close listening.” (Michael Jackson, Downbeat)

“The group’s terrific new album, Screen Sounds, applies a diversity of approaches to all kinds of source material, consistently retaining the essence of the original works while boldly imprinting the trio’s personality.” (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader)

“There are always new wrinkles to be found in the familiar. That’s a political stance that seems to serve the Joe Policastro Trio well…putting alternately gritty and focused touches on songs we’ve come to love….Policastro and company have found their niche tapping into different breeds of treasured songs.” (Dan Billawsky, All About Jazz)

True bands are a rarity in jazz these days, especially ones who hone their craft as consistently as this one does. Beyond Chicago, the band has been extensively playing together throughout the US and Canada having even performed for President Barack Obama in October of 2016. As sidemen, Joe Policastro (Phil Woods, Howard Alden, Pat and Debby Boone, Jeff Hamilton, Diane Schuur), Dave Miller (Clarice Assad, Patricia Barber, Algernon), and Mikel Avery (Joshua Abrams, Theaster Gates, Rob Mazurek) have performed and recorded with a wide array of musicians but dedicate collectively to this trio.

Buffalo Jazz Octet

Reflections of 1968 is a series of concerts reflecting on the social, political, historical, artistic and musical aspects of one of the most tumultuous years in American History. Musical and literary artists will look at 1968 through the words and music of the time and reflect on the influence and legacy from the immense creativity of that time. John Bacon, composer and percussionist, is a member of some of the most prominent Jazz groups in Western New York including Star People, The Buffalo Jazz Octet and the Bobby Militello Quartet. He is a music educator at UB, Villa Maria College and SUNY Fredonia. He has been honored as a composer through the New York State Foundation for the Arts (2013 Artist Fellow) and the New York State Council on the Arts (Individual Artist Composer Commission).

Bringing together these various activities Bacon has curated a series that asks musicians and literary artists to reflect on the impact of 1968 on the present. The artists will attempt to answer questions to the current era of social and political turbulence. How have we’ve honored the struggles and achievements of 1968? Has the promise of 1968 been fulfilled? What does the legacy of 1968 mean today? Can we find answers for our current difficulties in the efforts and achievements of 1968?

Big Tent featuring Harvey Sorgen

They are not a political party, but given all the different musical points of view brought to bear by these three veteran improvisers, a delicious Big Tent in sound is created when drummer/percussionist Harvey Sorgen, bassist Steve Rust and pianist/vocalist Jerome Kitzke come together. The resulting music is possessed of raw energy or delicate filigree and everything in between, all delivered with a passionate verve rooted in broad deep emotions that are served beautifully by the prodigious technique each player possesses. The use of poetry brings a tight formal cohesion to some this work and you know you are not hearing your average improv band. When they are ferocious, the roar is also quirky and when they are tender, the tear that forms will most likely come with a smile. Big Tent: endorsing bipartisan listening since 2003.

BIG TENT will be supporting their soon to be released record "I AM WAITING" featuring the poems of Lawrence Ferlinghetti

J.J. Johnson might be called the father of bebop trombone, with legendary mobility on his instrument. Trombonist Kai Winding was also a great player, and their playing in tandem is so in tune and so rhythmically together that they are like musical twins.

After touring extensively with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra as lead trombonist and arranger, Phil returned to Buffalo and has been very active as a performer, band leader, composer, and arranger. He has a Master’s Degree in Music from SUNY at Buffalo. Phil currently is a partner with Imagine Music Publishing, in Medina, NY and is the in-house arranger for Crosswater Digital Media in Buffalo, NY. Phil also performs with several jazz groups including his own Musicians of Buffalo Big Band, Katy Miner and the Cabaret Big Band, and is a leader of many smaller ensembles and a staple on the Western New York Jazz Scene. The Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen
Monday,October 15th, 8:00 pm

$30 advance/ $35 day of show

Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, legal name Le Sony'r Ra; May 22, 1914 – May 30, 1993) was an American jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his "cosmic philosophy," prolific musical output, and performances. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1979.

Controversial because of his eclectic music and unorthodox lifestyle, and claiming that he was of the "Angel Race", and not from Earth but from Saturn, Sun Ra developed a complex persona, using "cosmic" philosophies and lyrical poetry that made him a pioneer of afrofuturism. He preached awareness and peace above all. He abandoned his birth name and took on the name and persona of Sun Ra (Ra being the Egyptian God of the Sun), and used several other names throughout his career, including Le Sonra and Sonny Lee. Sun Ra denied any connection with his birth name, saying "That's an imaginary person, never existed... Any name that I use other than Ra is a pseudonym."

From the mid-1950s to his death, Sun Ra led "The Arkestra," an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible lineup, although certain core members remained with the group through its various incarnations (Marshal Allen, John Gilmore, June Tyson, and others). It was by turns called "The Solar Myth Arkestra," "His Cosmo Discipline Arkestra," the "Blue Universe Arkestra," "Myth Science Arkestra," "The Jet Set Omniverse Arkestra," and many other variations. Sun Ra asserted that the ever-changing name of his ensemble reflected the ever-changing nature of his music. His mainstream success was limited, but Sun Ra was a prolific recording artist and frequent live performer. His music ranged from keyboard solos to big bands of over 30 musicians and touched on virtually the entire history of jazz, from ragtime to swing music, from bebop to free jazz. He also used free improvisation and was one of the early musicians to make extensive use of electronic keyboards.

Amy Helm Band

Bop Shop Records is thrilled to have the AMY HELM BAND stop by for an afternoon performance and album signing on Saturday, 9/29. She is on tour promoting her new release on yep roc records and will be performing in Buffalo that evening.

Bop Shop Records
1460 Monroe Ave. Rochester NY
Saturday, September 29 at 1pm.

Amy Helm sought what she calls a “circular sound” for her new album. It’s a well-rounded one, one marked by streaks of Americana, country, blues, and gospel, and the kinds of four-part harmonies that can burst open a melody and close the loop of an octave. And sentimentally, it’s a sound that represents the feeling of community.

This Too Shall Light, due September 21st on Yep Roc Records, comprises 10 songs produced by Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Joe Henry. Helm left her home and comfort zone of
Woodstock, NY, choosing to record in Los Angeles within the confines of just a four-day window. The musicians were directed not to overthink the songs, and Helm herself barely performed any of the selections while leading up to the recording. As a result, the sessions forced fast musical trust among the collaborators and yielded the vibrant instrumental improvisations heard throughout This Too Shall Light.

Although a profound songwriter herself, Helm and Henry jointly arranged a diverse collection of songs for the record, which range from Rod Stewart’s “Mandolin Wind” to Allen Toussaint’s “Freedom for the Stallion” and even the Milk Carton Kids’ “Michigan.” The title track in particu
lar, written by Hiss Golden Messenger’s MC Taylor and Josh Kaufman (Josh Ritter, Bob Weir, Craig Finn), is a brilliant summation of the record’s sound and spirit. Seemingly a play on the old adage that “This too shall pass,” Helm’s voice veers from commanding to supplicating within a single soulful verse, as she manipulates that message so that light leads throughout even the darkest of times.

A lifelong musician and music-lover, Helm’s parents —The Band’s legendary drummer and singer Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus — guided her training and influences. She later became a founding member of the alt-country collective Ollabelle and served as a backing musician in her father's Midnight Ramble Band. And on This Too Shall Light, Helm says that two songs in particular pay homage to Levon — “The Stones I Throw,” a song he released in 1965 with Levon and the Hawks, and the closing traditional number, an a cappella version of the hymnal “Gloryland,” which was passed from father to daughter.

While This Too Shall Light is only Helm’s second album under her own name, it serves as a comprehensive portrait covering her life's journeys and recoveries; They’re the stories that, no matter where they take her, seem to end and begin in the same place like a circle. http://www.amyhelm.com

Abilene Bar and Lounge 153 Liberty Pole Way, Rochester NY
Thursday, September 13
doors 4pm, music 7pm
Cover: Super Low-Dough Show---Only $10 at the door

Legendary Singer-Songwriter Blackie Farrell might not be a household name, but among his peers he’s no unsung hero. His songs have been recorded and performed by artists ranging from Leo Kottke, Tom Russell, Robert Earl Keen, Dave Alvin and Michael Martin Murphy, to Bill Kirchen, Commander Cody, Ray Campi, Jerry Lee Lewis, Asleep at the Wheel, and Chris O’Connell. His 2016 album was produced by Abilene faves, Gurf Morlix and Bill Kirchen…and dig this, Blackie wrote (among many other great tunes!), the classic, “Mama Hated Diesels,” as featured on the debut album by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen.

Writing his first song at the age of 13, Blackie was inspired by the music he heard blasting from car radios and local music clubs in Oakland, California—everything from Jimmy Reed, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and John Lee Hooker to Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, and Marty Robbins. It was their gritty story-telling that influenced him. At his core, Blackie is a story-teller, cutting a straight line right through life’s jagged edges, not smoothing them over but illuminating their points. Some haunting, some heroic, his tales stick to your bones and conjure up lost spirits and the longings of a well-worn heart.

Mughal Muesli

Mughal Muesli

While grounded in the saxophone trio tradition of Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, and Henry Threadgill, Mughal Muesli is a band that seeks to expand and transcend the associations attached to their configuration. Saxophonist Xavier Del Castillo, drummer Vicente Hansen, and bassist Mat Muntz draw on elements from early European polyphony, Hindustani classical music, and 20th/21st century microtonality to inform their unique take on the trio format. Their debut album Imperial Cereal features original compositions, deconstructed standards, and new interpretations of works by Ornette Coleman, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, and J.S. Bach.

The band's name, originally conceived in delirious wordplay at the end of a long rehearsal, has acquired special meaning as the trio has matured. "Mughal" - referring to the North Indian empire of the same name - contains a sense of the weight of history upon all human endeavors. "Muesli" - a healthful mixture of grains and dried fruits invented in Switzerland - represents variety and versatility. Mughal Muesli thus signifies the coexistence of a wide range of influences and the ability to recombine them in tasteful ways.

Individually, Mughal Muesli's members boast extensive and diverse performing experience, having played everywhere from the hallowed halls of Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall to renowned jazz venues such as The Jazz Gallery and Cornelia St. Cafe, as well as experimental havens including The Stone and National Sawdust. Compositions by members of the trio have been featured at the DiMenna Center, The Stone, and Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival. Internationally, they have performed at the Umbria Jazz Festival, Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, Beijing Nine Gates Jazz Festival, JZ Shanghai, and Blue Note Beijing.

Angelica has a Master's in Arranging from William Paterson University.

"Tamez’s music, while including modern European and American instruments never seems to originate in their commonly associated styles and, while the language of his poetry is Spanish, the spirit of his music is pre-Columbian.At first, he almost seems to be playing at the guitar; but as his performance continues, you see that the guitar is what he plays his music on. Instead of accessing the “tradition” of the instrument (something he is quite capable of doing, as his discography shows), he goes to a tradition of place, where instruments are assimilated. In a sense, the umbrella he uses for his projects, “Non-Jazz,” is a non-sequitur, since indigenousness is the root of jazz as well.

Don Menza with Bob Sneider, Mike Melito & Danny Vitale

Don Menza is a powerful tenor saxophonist, with an dynamic and distinctive sound and soloing style. Born in Buffalo, New York in 1936, Menza started playing tenor saxophone when he was 13. After getting out of the Army, he was with Maynard Ferguson’s Orchestra (1960-1962) as both a soloist and an arranger.

A short tenure with Stan Kenton and a year leading a quintet in Buffalo preceded a period living in Germany (1964-1968). After returning to the U.S., he joined Buddy Rich’s 1968 big band in the “jazz tenor” chair, recording the famous solo cadenza on “Channel 1 Suite” (Recorded “live” at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas) that utilized circular breathing and has become known as a classic among music educators and musicians alike.

He settled in California and has worked with Elvin Jones (1969), Louie Bellson, as an educator, and in the studios. Don Menza, who has made far too few records, recorded as a leader for Saba (1965) in Germany, Discwasher (1979), Realtime, and Palo Alto (the latter two in 1981). Don was a long time member of The Tonight Show Band, with Johnny Carson.

His compositions, such as “Groovin’ Hard” and “Time Check” (both favorites of Doc Severinsen’s NBC Orchestra and Buddy Rich’s Big Band) have become standard repertoire in jazz studies programs at colleges and universities worldwide.

In 2005 Don Menza was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.

Wreckless Eric

He won’t recreate 1978 for you, he’ll blow your mind instead.

You can’t talk about Wreckless Eric without mentioning his enduring hit Whole Wide World – covered in stadiums and sheds from Aberdeen to Alabama – but there’s much more to him than just that.
With over 40 years of recording and touring behind him he shuns the dictates of nostalgia and doesn’t do comebacks for the simple reason that he never went away. His 2015 album ‘amERICa’was an urgent reminder of what he’s about, and new album Construction Time & Demolition is a musically complex trawl through the psyche of a man with plenty to say and nothing to lose. It’s always been that way: loud, dissonant, lyrical and gently melodic – cogent music for desperate times

New album Construction Time & Demolition out on April 6th
