Hamell on Trial (...for the Holidays!)

Following up last year’s mid-pandemic live stream, Ed Hamell is back at Bop Shop Records – live and in-person – just in time for the holidays!

Hamell on Trial is the musical alias of New York-based folk punk hero Ed Hamell. A one-man explosion, he is loud-as-war one minute, stepping off the microphone to whisper to an enthralled audience the next. His performances are informed by politics, passion, intelligence and the all-important sense of humor.

His caustic wit and devil-may-care attitude has long been a favorite of anti-establishment icons Aesop Rock, Kimya Dawson, Ani DiFranco and the critical elite inciting Rolling Stone magazine to call him "Bald, bold and superbad!" Henry Rollins says "Hamell is a one man rock show!" He has been described as "Bill Hicks, Hunter S. Thompson, and Joe Strummer all rolled into one" by Philadelphia Weekly and a "one man Tarantino flick: loud, vicious, luridly hilarious, gleefully and deeply offensive" by the Village Voice.

PAKT

PAKT recalls the fearless attitude and daring approach that originally defined progressive music: where the magic of the moment always triumphed over preconception. Templates be damned ... this music blazes its own path! This is truly exquisite fare, serving as a reminder to aficionados of what initially drew them to this most creative, visionary of genres.

PAKT is made up of fretless bass guitarist Percy Jones, guitarists Alex Skolnick and Tim Motzer, and drummer Kenny Grohowski. They are all very experienced players. Skolnick is best known as the lead guitarist in the thrash metal band Testament; he went on to freelance work, playing jazz with his Alex Skolnick Trio, and experimenting with World Music. Motzer has a long background in free improvisation as well, including the bands Bandit65 (with fellow guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel) and Orion Tango, plus many other recorded collaborations for his 1k Recordings label. Welsh bassist Jones (long time a New York resident) is known for his tenure in the jazz fusion group Brand X, collaborations with Suzanne Vega, as well as extensive studio work (especially with Brian Eno). Grohowski's recent associations include Imperial Triumphant, John Zorn, Brand X, Felix Pastorius & the Hipster Assassins.

Dan Weiss & Miles Okazaki

Dan Weiss and Miles Okazaki have been partners in rhythm for 20 years. Weiss is consistently recognized as a top drummer in publications such as the New York Times ("Five Drummers Whose Time is Now"), Modern Drummer ("Top 5 Jazz Drummers"), and Downbeat magazine ("Top Up and Coming Percussionist"), and has been a member of many of the most influential groups on the current scene including Dave Binney, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Matt Mitchell, and Chris Potter. He is also an accomplished tabla player, having performed with Ashish Khan and Ramesh Misra and studied with Samir Chatterjee for two decades.

Okazaki is known for his rhythmic approach to the guitar, is currently in groups led by Jonathan Finlayson, Matt Mitchell, Amir El Saffar, and gained wide recognition in recent years as the guitarist for Steve Coleman and Five Elements. The New York Times recently described his style as “utterly contemporary, free from the expectations of what it means to play a guitar in a group setting — not just in jazz, but any kind.”

Both Weiss and Okazaki are artists on the Pi recordings label, have appeared together on seven albums (three by Okazaki and four by Weiss), and are expecting to release a duo recording in the near future. In the duet setting, Weiss and Okazaki are able to explore extreme rhythmic territory and freely construct flowing improvised sets. The New York Times describes this method of performance: “The guitarist Miles Okazaki and the drummer Dan Weiss performed a duo set on Friday that suggested some of the new jazz musician’s inexhaustible options as they fit ideas together without stopping.”

Joe Fiedler's Open Sesame

In 2019 trombonist Joe Fiedler released Open Sesame, packed with inventive jazz readings of material drawn from his longstanding “day job” as an EMMY-nominated music director and staff arranger for the famed children’s show Sesame Street. The effort was equally beloved by lay listeners and the jazz world alike. DownBeat praised the music’s “diverse aesthetic,” in which Fiedler blends “elements of funk, rock, free-jazz and New Orleans polyphony into a potent mix that gives depth and texture to the lighthearted compositions.” When Fiedler and the band toured the music, including a stop at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with guest luminaries Wynton Marsalis and none other than Elmo himself, the realization set in that the project would be no one-off. “I have these songbooks from the Sesame Street office,” Fiedler says, “and if you whip through the first 30 tunes, absolutely everyone knows them. But there are six or seven thousand songs they’ve done over the past 50 years, with plenty of gold in there to do a second album for sure.”

Following up 2019’s warmly received Open Sesame, the EMMY-nominated Fiedler highlights an expansive trombone voice, richly interpretive arrangements and keen orchestration chops on Fuzzy and Blue (available from Multiphonics Music on November 12, 2021).

Legacy X (Joe McPhee & Jay Rosen)

Reed/brass player Joe McPhee (who made his recording debut with his Underground Railroad album in 1969) and drummer Jay Rosen have a long- standing performing relationship with each other — and with the Bop Shop — dating back to the 1990s. The two musicians, along with master bassist Dominic Duval, formed Trio X in 1997. McPhee’s first concert at the Bop Shop was a memorable solo set back in 1998, which was followed a year later by the first of five Trio X concerts. Throughout the years, both McPhee and Rosen have led and played in many ensembles at the Bop Shop, as did Duval until his untimely passing in 2016. While both are known as free jazz players, that label can be as limiting as it is open. Listen closely and one will hear surprising touchstones in their music. Listen to “A Valentine in The Fog of War” (from Moods: Playing With The Elements) and one will hear the Edwin Starr classic “War” lurking in the bass line during a version of “My Funny Valentine.”

Rosen was recently the drummer of McPhee’s Loose Booty Octet at this year’s Vision Festival, where he supplied the openness needed for his fellow musicians as well as a sturdy backbeat when it was called for. McPhee’s instruments can roar and rage, but he also can provide interludes of stunning beauty. Be assured, you’re going to hear two master improvisers at work on their respective instruments when they perform here. You won’t want to miss it.

Wreckless Eric

Wreckless Eric

As Wreckless Eric he needs little introduction — he wrote and recorded the classic Whole Wide World and had a hit with it back in 1977. Since then it's been a hit for countless other artists including The Monkees, Cage The Elephant and most recently for Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day.

As Eric Goulden it's a little more complicated - a musician, artist, writer, recording engineer and producer, he didn’t like either the music business or the mechanics of fame or the name he’d been given to hide behind, so he crawled out of the spotlight and went underground. He went on to release twenty something albums in forty something years under various names - The Len Bright ComboLe Beat Group ElectriqueThe Donovan Of TrashThe Hitsville House Band, and with his wife as one half of Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby, finally realizing he was stuck with the name Wreckless Eric.

Eric’s three most recent albums ‘amERICa’Construction Time & Demolition and Transience are widely praised as his best work to date. His albums encapsulate pop, bubblegum, garage trash and psychedelia. His live performance is a sonic journey through time and space incorporating songs from all stages of his long career. Unmasked, unhinged and still alive - a survivor of Covid-19 (resulting in a near-fatal heart attack), Eric presents himself alone if not simply with electric and acoustic guitars, electrified harmonica, piano and electronics of his own making.

"The achievement for Wreckless Eric is to have made new music that connects to old music without maudlin nostalgia or huffy defensiveness, refusing to let age dim the passion for the music that means the most to him. In other words, he rocks."
– Ken Tucker, FRESH AIR / NPR

Charlie Ballantine
Oct
1
8:00 PM20:00

Charlie Ballantine

Charlie Ballantine is a music maker who lives in the world. That may be a strange way to springboard into what should be your typical music focused press release, but Charlie is no typical musician. First off, he is a critically acclaimed, supremely talented jazz guitarist. In fact, he's the Professor of Guitar at the University of Indianapolis and Professor of Guitar at Marian University, also in Indianapolis. As a teacher it is Charlie’s duty to know, and to point to the vast repertoires of those he calls predecessors and those who have also stood as guiding lights for his students.

The palette reaches beyond the classroom, setting the output of such legendary figures as Kurt Vonnegut and Bob Dylan, among others, to new interpretation. 2018’s Life Is Brief: The Music Of Bob Dylan, garnered particular praise, Indy’s National Road Magazine musing, “Therein lies the beauty of Ballantine. Don’t try to guess what tune he’s covering. The fact that you couldn’t come up with the name is what makes his work incredible.”

Therein lies the distinction between your run-of-the-mill tribute record and the sort of thing Ballantine does best. The material gets shot through a veritable cannon of re-envisioning. In effect, the genius of these historic works, like the repertoire at hand, are not disrupted. In fact, on the other side, there is a reveal of a brand new dimension of the original work.

It is with this in mind that we present, Reflections/Introspection: The Music Of Thelonious Monk, Charlie Ballantine’s homage to the great Thelonious Monk with a body of work laying over a double LP set, one side of which is a tribute to Monk’s trio playing, and the other being a salute to his incredible quartets (Coltrane, Rouse, Griffin, to name a few) as well as each side featuring homages to his solo work.

Reflections/Introspection: The Music Of Thelonious Monk will be released on September 17, 2021 on Green Mind Records. Watch the music video for the first single, 'Brilliant Corners.'

Charlie Ballantine (guitar) will be joined by John Sims (bass) and Chris Parker (drums) for this live, in-store performance.

Christoph Irniger Trio & Michaël Attias

Christoph Irniger Trio & Michaël Attias

The Christoph Irniger Trio celebrates melody without once degenerating into the trivial. They are tone poems which demonstrate that accessible melodies and complex tonal worlds need not be mutually exclusive and can in fact make sense of each other. Irniger is a master of orchestration and rejects the hierarchy of soloist-plus-rhythm. Instead of using the compositions as springboards for solos, he finds interesting ways for the improvisations to underline the compositional characteristics. Melody, arrangement, improvisation: the trio fuse them all into one tightly integrated and alluring package,’ writes American jazz critic Kevin Whitehead.

In the current setting the band plays as quartet with saxophone player Michaël Attias - who was a member of bands of Paul Motian, Ralph Alessi and Kris Davis amongst others - and presents together the album "Open City" which was released in September 2020 on Intakt Records.

The Christoph Irniger Trio was formed in 2012, with Raffaele Bossard on double bass and Ziv Ravitz on percussion. With Gowanus Canal (2012) and Octopus (2015) they have delivered two exemplary albums. The trio can be compared with an equilateral triangle; Raffaele Bossard, born 1982 in Los Angeles, raised and educated in Zug (Switzerland), and Ziv Ravitz, born 1976 Be’er Scheva in Israel, currently living in Paris, sit eye to eye with Irniger, born 1979 in Zurich (Switzerland). They are not only eminent technicians, they are also adept at interplay, like sleepwalkers. With illustrious guests - as also Loren Stillman (born 1980) and Nils Wogram (born 1972) on the record - Christoph Irniger’s trio creates music which unites intelligence and passion, timeless yet up to date.

Bending And Breaking (10 Year Reunion Show)

“‘Bending And Breaking’ is percussionist and composer Aaron Staebell's debut as a bandleader; a debut filled with energy, enthusiasm, and invention, signaling the appearance of yet another talented newcomer on the scene. …

… As well as musical ability, ‘Bending And Breaking’ demonstrates Staebell's welcome sense of humor. It's in his sleeve notes... and in titles like "Nobody Reads Your Blog." It's also in the music, such as the jaunty fairground organ that suddenly appears midway through ‘Grumbleboxx.’ Surprises like that give ‘Bending And Breaking’ added spark, and make Staebell's emerging presence doubly welcome.”
– Bruce Lindsat, AllAboutJazz

Ten years ago, drummer Aaron Staebell assembled a powerhouse group of fellow Eastman School of Music classmates to record what became a locally beloved record, Bending And Breaking.

With all five original band members together in the same city for the first time in a decade, Bop Shop Records is proud to host this special 10-year reunion show featuring some spectacular home-grown talent. Benny Bleu & The Blue Lemons

Poster by Maria Darron

Poster by Maria Darron

An award winning banjo player, a square dance fiddler, and a cherished songwriter, Benny Bleu lives up to the truest form of folk music – made by the folks, for the folks. His latest project, 'Swatting the Flies' started as a pandemic project. Bits and pieces of recordings made in a bayside cabin in Maine just as the first wave and shut-in was upon us.

As the project progressed, Benny incorporated old ideas which had been on the shelf for years and new obsessions (namely Cajun and La-La rhythms) to produce his second full-length album. Several cuts from the CD are instrumental banjo, fiddle, and fingerstyle blues guitar pieces, made entirely by Benny while holed up in seclusion. And a handful of collaborations with good friends highlight and cornerstone the record. He brings his trio to Bop Shop Records on July 1 to play cuts from the new album and other chestnuts sure to motivate the limbs and exercise the mind.

The artistic paths and creative projects of drummer Tomas Fujiwara, guitarist Mary Halvorson, and cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum have been deeply entwined for over fifteen years, while each has established a reputation as a leading figure in their generation’s creative music community.

Since first connecting in Bynum’s Trio and Sextet in 2005, the three musicians have played together on hundreds of concerts and dozens of recordings, including with Fujiwara’s Triple Double, Bynum’s 9-tette and PlusTet, the collective quartets Illegal Crowns (with pianist Benoit Delbecq) and The Thirteenth Assembly (with violist Jessica Pavone), and in the Chicago meets NYC all-star band Living By Lanterns. In addition, Fujiwara and Halvorson work together in Thumbscrew, the Out Louds, Fujiwara’s The Hook Up and Halvorson’s Code Girl; Fujiwara and Bynum have maintained a duo for over two decades; and Halvorson and Bynum have shared the stage on multiple Anthony Braxton ensembles, including his long-running Diamond Curtain Wall Trio.
