Jazz meets Mexico and Latin America
"An improvised approach to Mexican and Latin American folk music"
Guitarist Omar Tamez and pianist Angelica Sanchez have become Bop Shop favorites. Angie first performed here back in 2004 with her quartet in the Atrium. Omar first performed here at the innaugural concert in the new store in a duo with drummer Harvey Sorgen in 2012. And last year, the two of them performed here with their Fortuna Quartet that included Sorgen and bassist Joe Fonda. It was a memorable concert, free improvisation with ritualistic flavor creating a unique music that transported the audience to another world.
We’re excited to have the duo of Omar and Angie returning for another concert. Bruce Lee Gallantier of the Downtown Music Gallery sums their duet album Dias De Sol this way: The music on this disc is haunting, dream-like, floating, unsettling yet somewhat calm. This duo works well together, slowly weaving their lines into an unpredictable tapestry. At times they start heading to the outer regions yet always seems to end up in a familiar raft drifting together.” It’s also been describes as an improvised approach to Mexican and Latin American folk music. It’s a one of a kind musical experience.
Those who were here on that magical night last November have an idea as to what’s in store. Those who weren’t should be ready for a wonderful surprise.
Omar and Angie plan to stay the following day. Saturday, April 2, to participate in our workshop Jazz Is Ugly….Jazz Is Beautiful, a symposium on what drives us to create, play, present and listen to jazz in the 21st century. Omar has created and run the Monterrey Live Music And Jazz Musicians Meeting bringing creative improvised music to Monterrey, Mexico, an area not known for its jazz scene. And it has been a successful enterprise for the past dozen years. Angie has assembled and run groups with the most creative musicians on the New York jazz scene since she arrived there in the 1990s. They are both singularly poised to talk about and share their experiences in this area and it should be one of the highlights of the symposium.
