Andre Cholmondeley: solo electronics/guitar. A blend of ambient textures, trip-hop influenced beats, an ongoing study of musique concrete, and a search for unconventional timbres and sounds in a musical setting. Synthesizer, guitar, rhythms and where they all blur & overlap.
Andre Cholmondeley, musician, multi-instrumentalist, and music-biz multi-tasker, is the founder of Project/Object, the longest running Zappa-alumni-based tribute band in the world.
By day Andre is a tech for various and diverse artists. On tour continually, with tech gigs that range from guitar and bass, to synth/audio software, for a variety of legendary artists.
When not on tour working for others, Cholmondeley tours with a number of projects including his band Project/Object: The Music Of Frank Zappa. They have been touring a dozen countries on two continents for over 25 years. The band has enjoyed the onstage company of over a dozen of Zappa’s most beloved, iconic sidemen; from early Mothers to his final 1988 band.
Since the early 1980s, Cholmondeley has included synthesis in his original music, using early guitar synths like the Casio MG510 and synth pedals like the Electro Harmonix Guitar-Synth. Seeing King Crimson on their early 1980s “Discipline” tour was a seminal experience, and Andre recalls: “I was right up front. They walked on and it felt like my music world had changed. Not only were they playing musical forms that I was not equipped to fully understand…but the instruments …… Stick, electronic drums, guitar synths, weird pickups and boxes, were otherworldly”
Andre went on to get a computer degree at Middlesex County College and then minor in Music at Rutgers University. A highlight was studying with downtown NYC stalwarts Daniel Goode and Philip Corner. Learning musique concrete found sound concepts with Goode, plus tape splicing and Cage-influenced chance-based composition was all invaluable. With Corner he studied music theory as well as Music Of The World, a profound insight to the variety of human sound-making, the history of various instrument families, and a respect for listening, finding music in everything.
Cholmondeley has demoed at trade shows for MOOG MUSIC: The Moog Guitar at Musikmesse in Frankfurt Germany, and the Moog MP-201 Control pedal at NAMM in Anaheim CA. Through the Zappa connection, Cholmondeley began working in 2001 with the legendary synth pioneer Don Preston, who was in Zappa’s Mothers Of Invention from 1966-1974. Preston, still active at 86 and still collaborating with Cholmondeley on music and tours, began making electronic music and custom synthesis instruments in the late 1950s. From 2001-2010 Preston, Cholmondeley and electronic percussionist Cheri Jiosne toured as The Akashic Ensemble. That chapter came to a close when Jiosne, also Cholmondeley’s life partner, was tragically felled by cancer. In 2015 to commemorate Cheri, Preston and Cholmondeley did a short tour with a revamped trio featuring master percussionist Mike Dillon. This trio hopes to continue work in the coming year. Andre also recently performed at the 2019 MOOGFEST in Durham NC as part of Modular On The Spot.
